log rolling

For the long weekend, we went to jennie lakes wilderness located between kings canyon and sequoia for a 3 day backpacking trip.

Day 1 summary:
  • 6.5 miles to jennie lake
  • poop out pass was not as hard or as long as I thought it would be (esp since I didn't realize we were on it and I asked a fellow hiker when it would come up and he said we were on it already).
  • There were lots of dogs at jennie lake. I guess this wilderness is very dog friendly. On the plus side, I figured any bears that came to our area would eat the dogs before eating us. maybe.
  • We were sitting on a log enjoying the scenery when this older asian guy came by with an empty jug trying to find a good place to fill it with water. I made some side comment to C that we should try to get the dude to walk out on the log we were sitting on because that would be so entertaining if he fell in. Lo and behold, the guy did walk out on the log (i swear we only made the suggestion but he acted on it). Then of course, he realize he couldn't safely come back holding the full jug of water and was stuck until C suggested he use a hiking pole for balance.

    Day 2 summary:
  • 8.8 miles to Weaver lake which was thankfully way less crowded though we were mentally thinking it was 7.5 miles so that last mile was mentally brutal.
  • Way more mosquitoes here - i was eaten alive
  • We noticed a sunblock bottle floating in the lake here and we were a bit bothered by the litter so I suggested C go out and fetch it. In order to get there though required some balancing on logs so of course it only took a little more prodding and double daring to get him to take on the challenge. I had to take a video to record the moment (he made it look easier than it was I swear).

Fetching the sunblock bottle from the lake to the theme of crickets chirping. This video will probably entertain no one but us since it took me so damn long to figure out how to use iMovie.

    Day 3 summary:
  • 3.2 miles to the car. yay!
  • Replenished all weight lost with massive meals at Ihop. No wonder middle america is so large. oof.

You would sacrifice someone's dog to the bears? Dude. Totally not allowed over when we get a puppy.

Well, I wouldn't say we would offer up the dogs to the bears. More like some of these dogs seemed stupid enough that they would go chasing a bear if one appeared.

The water was pretty warm for an alpine lake at 9000'.

Remind me to bring mosquito repellent next time...
