So I've probably babbled to a lot of you in person already about this great book I just read called Farm City. It's about this lady in west oakland who took an abandoned lot and turned it into a vegetable garden complete with chickens, ducks, rabbits, and pigs. Her journey into becoming an urban farmer was just fascinating given that she lived in a somewhat ghetto neighborhood complete with pot farms and homeless folks. The best part could be that she and her bf would go dumpster diving for scraps for their pigs and a homeless man felt pity for them and tried to give them a dollar. What was even more amazing was that she became friends with a chef at a fancy restaurant who taught her how to make salami from her pig.
I have an urge to go venture into oakland looking for her farm. The next best thing is that chow.com just made a video about her and her farm so now I can just virtually visit.
C is lucky that we don't live on a lot big enough to support more farm animals.
