So to give some context, I had a trip planned to yosemite to camp at Hodgdon Meadow last weekend. After the heat wave the weekend before, I was looking forward to a pleasant weekend in the mountains. Friday night, someone in the group emailed saying there was a 30% chance of thunderstorms. I was like "pshaw. I'm sure it won't rain where we are". Famous last words. When we got there on saturday, it was actually super super warm and we enjoyed the nice warm weather. In the afternoon, we went out for a hike off of tioga pass at Olmstead Point. On our hike over to Tenaya lake, we heard thunder in the distance but no rain yet so we kept trudging along. Suddenly the rain hit and we turned around and hiked back to the car really really fast.
At this point, I was really worried about our campground because we hadn't made sure that everything was rain ready when we left. So we drove back in a hurry and luckily it was still blue skies over our area. We started grilling all the food immediately at 4pm but had just eaten the last kabob when the downpour hit. What do you do when it rains? Run to the car. The 8 of us divided into 2 cars to huddle from the rain. An hour and a half later, C suggested that we just go to sleep in the tent even though it was super early (like 8pm). So we made a mad dash and settled in for the night. The other car of people were still comfortably ensconced and a few hours later, I heard them gather around the firepit when the rain let up. I went back out at this point since the rain stopped and got to enjoy a few hours of conversation around the fire which is always the best thing about camping.
Overnight, it started pouring buckets again and I got up in the morning when there was a lull but alas it was short. 15 minutes later, it started raining again and I started trying to figure out a solution where we could make breakfast still. This is when I had my MacGyver moment since all I had was 1 tarp and two bungees. So I needed 2 more pieces of rope somehow. Sitting in my car, I stared at what was around me which was an endless supply of hairbands which of course led to me making two ropes of hairbands. Awesome. So we had a nice dry cooking area for all. Success! And next time we are so bringing a canopy.
